2025: CYFA AML & Compliance Affairs Breakfast
April 3rd, 2025
On April 3rd, 2025, CX Financia attended the AML & Compliance Affairs Breakfast Meeting of the Cyprus Fiduciary Association (CYFA) which was held at the Amathus Beach Hotel in Limassol. The event gathered compliance professionals who came together to discuss the most important regulatory issues they face in their everyday activities and ways to tackle them.
Dealing with the Puzzles of Sanctions Compliance
Sanctions are not static and are subject to change due to political developments. The attendees also mentioned some of the problems that businesses encounter in the real world when it comes to compliance with different jurisdictions. Compliance teams have problems with managing updates which leads to delays and uncertainty in the work of the team.
Addressing the Problems through the Application of Screening Technology
The participants identified similar problems with automated screening systems including false positives and missed alerts. The inaccuracies in the system put a huge burden on the compliance teams who have to verify every alert manually. Data quality enhancement and system accuracy improvement were identified as key areas for more effective compliance.
Enhancing the Information Flow Between Businesses and Financial Institutions
Another key area of discussion was the persistent communication problem between regulated firms and financial institutions. Many participants were unhappy with unexplained transaction rejections and account closures and felt that banking institutions should provide clear and consistent guidelines and standards.
The Gap Between Regulators and Service Providers: Where is the Meeting Point?
One of the most interesting parts of the meeting was the round table which was moderated by Xenia Neophytou, the Managing Director of CX Financia and also a member of the AML Technical Committee of CYFA. Xenia started the discussion with the presentation of the challenges of businesses due to unclear or late regulatory requirements.
Xenia, our CX Financia Director, who reflected on these challenges, said:
“Regulators’ clear and timely guidance is not only good, it is essential. Uncertainty in regulatory requirements impairs business operations, obstructs risk management efforts, and erodes the trust that businesses have in the regulatory process.”
Participants agreed, noting that vague responses from regulators often delay key decisions—especially in high-risk compliance cases.
Practical Recommendations Derived from the Discussion
In response to these challenges, participants made the following recommendations:
- The service providers and regulators should be in a position to have a proper and well defined channel of communication.
- Developing a single compliance manual and practical guide for all companies.
- There is need to publish enforcement case studies in an anonymized form in order to help the companies understand the regulatory requirements and set examples to follow.
The Director of CX Financia stressed on the need for joint solutions:
“The establishment of formal communication channels and publicly available case studies would greatly improve the clarity and consistency. By sharing these insights across the sector, we transform compliance from a legal requirement into a business enabler.”
CX Financia’s Commitment to AML Compliance
Throughout the event, CX Financia, a firm focusing on growth, stressed the value of an integrated compliance approach. We highlighted the need to identify risks, define controls, and measure residual risk. When these areas align, they reduce ambiguity and help teams focus on real risks—not just admin tasks. As discussed in our recent article on AML trends and EU compliance updates, we remain committed to these conversations and to driving meaningful change across the industry.
Ongoing Involvement and Industry Leadership
CYFA 2025 Breakfast Meeting was an event where professional ideas and solutions were exchanged. CX Financia will stay engaged in these discussions and continue pushing for real change in compliance practices.
In conclusion, CX Financia’s Director reiterated the company’s commitment to the continued development of the sector as a whole:
“Compliance should be based on transparency, practical guidance, and the involvement of all the parties concerned. Events like these show that real progress happens when regulators and businesses engage in open dialogue.
